Approaches to Chant\nPerformance<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. Augustine’s\nSeminary of Toronto<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gregorian\nInstitute of Canada is dedicated to strengthening and sustaining the\nvital connection between chant studies and chant singing. The\nperformance of chant is not simply a musical replica of a tradition\nlargely lost to the Middle Ages \u2013 a variant of the \u2018Historically\nInformed Performance\u2019 movement \u2013 but actively involves current\nideas in Theology, History, Paleography, and Sociology and must\nremain so to be relevant today. Our special guest, Marcel P\u00e9r\u00e8s,\nhas spent his life championing this close connection between research\nand performance through his Ensemble Organum, founded in 1982. In\n2001, he founded CIRMA, the Centre itin\u00e9rant de recherche sur les\nmusiques anciennes, in Moissac, France. His recordings with Ensemble\nOrganum have attracted much attention and great acclaim for their\ncompelling and fresh interpretations of ancient music, based on new\nresearch. We celebrate his presence with us by inviting scholars and\nliturgical musicians to speak about how the performance of chant fits\nwithin the scope of their own work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please send a\n250-word abstract to the program committee at chant@gregorian.ca.\nAbstracts may be sent (and papers presented) in either English or\nFrench. Conference papers will be limited to 30 minutes, followed by\na 10-minute discussion period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deadline for\nproposals is Monday, Feb. 3, 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’Institut gr\u00e9gorien du Canada se consacre \u00e0 renforcer et \u00e0 maintenir le lien vital entre l’\u00e9tude et l’ex\u00e9cution du chant gr\u00e9gorien. Il s’agit non seulement de respecter la tradition dans l’ex\u00e9cution du chant, tradition qui en grande partie demeure un secret du Moyen-\u00c2ge, une variante du Historically Informed Performance mais aussi de tenir compte des id\u00e9es les plus r\u00e9centes en mati\u00e8re de th\u00e9ologie, d’histoire, de pal\u00e9ographie et de sociologie, afin que l’interpr\u00e9tation du chant gr\u00e9gorien demeure vivante et pertinente. Notre invit\u00e9 sp\u00e9cial, Marcel P\u00e9r\u00e8s s’est fait le champion du travail de recherche reli\u00e9 \u00e0 l’interpr\u00e9tation avec l’ensemble Organum fond\u00e9 en 1982. En 2001, il a aussi fond\u00e9 le Centre itin\u00e9rant de recherche sur les musiques anciennes (CIRMA) \u00e0 Moissac en France. Ses enregistrements avec l’ensemble Organum ont \u00e9t\u00e9 acclam\u00e9s pour une approche novatrice \u00e0 la musique ancienne bas\u00e9e sur les recherches les plus r\u00e9centes. \u00c0 l’occasion de la venue de Marcel P\u00e9r\u00e8s parmi nous, nous invitons les chercheurs et les musiciens liturgiques \u00e0 partager les r\u00e9sultats de leurs travaux et leurs id\u00e9es sur l’interpr\u00e9tation  du chant gr\u00e9gorien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pri\u00e8re de faire parvenir le r\u00e9sum\u00e9 analytique de 250 mots au comit\u00e9 de la programmation: chant@gregorian.ca<\/a><mailto:chant@gregorian.ca<\/a>>. Les communications peuvent \u00eatre faites en anglais ou en fran\u00e7ais et ne devront pas d\u00e9passer 30 minutes, suivies d’une p\u00e9riode de questions de 10 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
